    Spring Equinox Celebration

Please join us in celebration of Spring Equinox. On March 25, 2006 the temple will present an evening of ritual theater which combines mythology and art to re-connect us to the earth, as well as strengthen our connection to the earth. Our rituals are multi-media programs combining music, dance, liturgy, spoken word, visual art, and participatory theater. You will be given the opportunity to participate with drumming and dancing and to plant seeds for your own life. These seeds represent what you would like to grow in the garden of your life in 2006. It could be a new project or job, a new relationship, whatever hopes or dreams you have been nurturing in the dark winter soil of your heart-space.

Spring is the time of new life bursting forth, of realizing the potential inherent in warmer days and the growth of a brighter sun. The equinoxes possess light and dark in equal share in a moment’s balance.

Spring Equinox is the time of conception, when the solar light is ascending and overcomes darkness in its eternal dance across the sky. Now is the time to take action; launch new projects; set new goals and directions; plant the seeds that you have nurtured, protected, and meditated upon throughout the dark, winter months. At this time of spring transformation, we are given the opportunity to start fresh, enrich the soil of our consciousness, and nurture the dreams that inspire us to soar to our highest potential.

    May the wind blow sweetness,
    the rivers flow sweetness,
    the herbs grow sweetness,
    for the People of Truth!

    Sweet be the night,
    sweet the dawn,
    sweet the earth's fragrance,
    sweet be our heaven!

May the tree afford us sweetness,
    the sun shine sweetness,
    our cows yield sweetness–
    milk in plenty.

    Circle of Life
    Bodhi Rosen

As the Wheel of Life spins, the seasons bear witness to the covenant of the Goddess, her promise of life and the never-ending cycle of birth, death, and renewal. To each of us in times of both joy and sorrow She sweetly whispers, "Be not afraid of my cycles and embrace the changing nature of all things, the permanence within the impermanence. The seasons bear witness to this promise I manifested for you. For surely, the darkness and death of winter is followed by the light and renewal of spring."

    We Honor and Celebrate:

Baby girl, Bodhi Rosen, Temple of the Goddess newest little goddess, was born very early Saturday, March 11th. She greeted her mother at 2:30 am and weighed in at six pounds, four ounces. Bodhi and mother, temple priestess Haize Rosen, both came through the experience tired, but happy to have one another.

Father, Ken Rosen, along with their lovely doula, assisted Haize and witnessed Bodhi’s birth into the world. Haize is a much loved temple dancer, choreographer, and ritual facilitator.

Bodhi is the first baby born into the Temple of the Goddess community and we welcome her with open arms. Join with us as we wish Haize, Ken, Bodhi and siblings Jahi and Satori many blessings and good wishes.

    We Remember:

The mother of our beloved priestess and singer/songwriter Berit Jordahl, Solveig Pedersen Jordahl passed away at home with her loved ones at her side on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at the age of 72. She is survived in California by her husband of 50 years, Sigurd Jordahl; her children Geir, Berit, and Irene; and daughter-in-law Kate. Solveig is survived in Norway by her sisters Kanny, Inger, and Peggy, and her many nieces and nephews in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. She is preceded in death by her mother Borghild Dragsett Pedersen and father Torleif Pedersen and sisters Bjørg, Aslaug, and Jorunn. Read on...

    What Is Religion?

Was there ever a subject more volatile than that of Religion? Countless wars have been fought over it. Millions and millions of people have died for it. Countries have been subjugated because of it. Entire nations, tribes and communities have been wiped out. And all in the name of . . . Religion.

But what is religion? Is it dogma? “Prescribed doctrine, specific tenets, authoritative principles, established beliefs?” And established by whom? Is it Liturgy? “A collection of formularies for public worship, a particular arrangement of service?” Or could it be tradition? “The handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs from generation to generation; a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting, a body of laws or doctrines?” Tradition doesn’t carry with it the volatility of history and colonialism as does religion. But does one tradition of “statements, beliefs, legends, and customs” apply to everyone the world over? Is that one tradition to become the religion of all? Or is religion simply spirituality? “Pertaining to the spirit or soul.” More. . .

Goddess and Paganism: The Old Religion
    Stonehenge

The extent to which Paganism is misunderstood never ceases to be a surprise. With the revelation that one is a “pagan” the question that inevitably follows with pity and disbelief is, “Oh, you have no religion?” Then comes the deep, quieting breath before launching into what has now become an almost practiced litany. Paganism is a religion, the oldest religion in the world. In fact it is often referred to as "The Old Religion" dating back at least 25,000 years. The term "The Old Religion" describes the pre-Christian religion of much of western and northern Europe which was based on the agricultural cycles and the rhythms of the Earth.

Through countless images sketched on cave walls, we look at the past with eyes that see partnerships between men and women. We see the hunt and the honoring of the herds. We also see male shamans dressed in skins and horns in identification with the God and the herds, as well as the female priestesses embodying the fertility of the Goddess.

That's where we began and here we are now -- Pagan, defined by Webster as "a heathen (contrasted with Christian or Jew), a person who has no religion." However, the etymology of Pagan is Latin pagani meaning country-dwellers, the rural people whose religious conservatism caused them to be faithful to the "old gods and goddesses" of Europe (Barbara Walker). Heathen came from the Germanic heiden, that which is hidden, because these same rural people were officially forbidden the rites of the old deities, yet clinging to their beliefs, the Pagan people continued their rites in secret.

Paganism refers to any earth-centered, earth-based religion. This includes the spirituality of most indigenous people. Studies of various spiritual traditions of the Americas show many similarities with the indigenous spiritual tradition of old Europe known as Paganism. Continued. . .

    March Astronomy

    by Peter Duffy

The Vernal or Spring Equinox for the Northern Hemisphere falls officially on March 20th, 2006 at 10:26 a.m. Pacific time. At that time the sun will be over the Brazilian Rainforest, directly over the equator, balancing 12 hours of sunlight with 12 hours of night. Day and night are not exactly equal that day for the latitude of Los Angeles, California. That happened about March 17th this year.

Known in other cultures in past times as Eostar, Eostre, among other names; these names are the source for the name of the day now known as Easter, and the hormone estrogen.

Persephone ascends from Hades at springtime. The Phrygian fertility Goddess Cybele's son by virgin birth, Attis, is said to have died and been resurrected at the Equinox. We are surrounded by rebirth.

    Did You Know...?
    eScrip Logo

Temple of the Goddess has two easy ways to help support our evolving vision. Both are simple, totally painless, and involve shopping–something we have to do whether we like it or not.

Through our association with AMAZON, you can simply go to our Temple Store and click through to Amazon and a percentage of your purchase price is credited to Temple of the Goddess' account. Without reaching deeper into your pocket, and with a minimum of effort, you will offer a much needed love donation to the temple.

You can also support our many worthwhile projects and activities by signing up for eScrip so that when you are shopping a percentage of your purchases will be donated directly to Temple of the Goddess! eScrip is a method through which various merchants have agreed to donate a percentage of each sale to charity. It’s easy to do, and it doesn’t take a penny from your pocket.

Please take a few moments right now, go to eScrip, sign up and safely register one or more credit cards. Stipulate that all donations be given to Temple of the Goddess. Then when you shop at participating stores and use the registered card, it happens. From 2% to 8%, depending on the merchant and the amount purchased, goes into Temple of the Goddess’ account. All without taking money from your pocket, or even thinking of the purchase as a donation. How easy is that? Read more about eScrip here.
