Celebrating the Seasons: Summer
Solstice
Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, is the
time for nurturing the seeds we planted in the spring,
the time for weeding and pruning that which would
limit our harvests. The sun is hot in the bright, azure
sky, ready to pour its energy into our projects, but we
must have open arms and an open heart, ready to
accept its abundance.
Our evening of myth and ritual theater begins by
honoring the power of the Sun, the power of growth,
and the power of life. We welcome the Sun Goddess
and the lessons she offers during this cycle of the
season. Having found courage in Spring to plant our
seeds and grow the garden of our dreams, now
begins the work of caring and nurturing our projects
and dreams.
As our Summer myth and enactment unfolds, we
realize the great work we must do to keep our
Gardens alive and thriving in the heat of the summer
sun. The dream seeds we planted in the Spring need
tending as they grow into young plants and flowers. In
order for them to thrive, we must tenaciously pull the
weeds of fear, laziness, or misplaced beliefs that
would strangle or block new growth and life. We must
constantly keep our gardens nurtured with the water of
love and faith.
Journey with us as we seek the essence of true
strength to be the successful Gardeners of our
Lives.

"The seasons and all their changes
are in me." -Henry David Thoreau
We hope you will join the temple, in community, to
honor the seasons, the Earth, and our own personal
growth for our 2007 Ritual Sabbats. This year's theme
is "Reclaiming the Earth."
Our multi-cultural Earth celebrations are held at the
Neighborhood Unitarian Church in Pasadena and are
open to families and community. Our Sabbats are
multi-media ritual theater combining mythology,
music, visual art, dance, liturgy, spoken word, and
participatory theater which fuses drum and dance
with personal enactment to re-connect us to the
seasons and the Earth.

The sun at Summer Solstice is at its highest, even if
hiding behind low lying clouds. Mother Earth is heavy
with Her pregnancy as we are heavy with our own
pregnancies (philosophies forming, plans stewing in
the backs of our minds, or different elements of a
formed plan coming into fruition). As with any
gestation, care must be taken that the child will be
birthed having the rosy glow of health.

Wiccans Keep the Faith With a Religion Under
Wraps
A stay-at-home mother of two in Northern Virginia
who was raised Southern Baptist keeps her Wiccan
faith secret. Not even her mother knows.
Dumfries, Va.-Above the woman's fireplace hangs
her wedding picture, taken in a Lutheran church years
ago. Below it, on the mantelpiece, is a small Wiccan
altar: two candles, a tiny cauldron, four stones to
represent the elements of nature and a small
amethyst representing her spirit.
The wedding portrait is always there. But whenever
someone comes to visit, the woman sweeps the altar
away. Raised Southern Baptist in Virginia and now a
stay-at-home mother of two in this Washington
suburb, she has told almost no one-not her
relatives, her friends or the other mothers in her
children's playgroups-that she is Wiccan.

Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun
Amaterasu, goddess of the sun in Japanese
mythology, was a beautiful and compassionate
goddess who ruled both the sun and the heavenly
fields of rice that fed the Japanese people. Uzume
was a lesser goddess, responsible for laughter and
revelry.
The goddess Amaterasu, the divine ancestor of the
Japanese imperial family, and the goddess Uzume
(who brought her out of her deep depression) are
heroines in Japanese myths that parallel the story of
Demeter and the maidservant Baubo in Greek
mythology.
